From the seller
Original vintage RCA 77-D ribbon microphone, one of RCA’s legendary broadcast and studio microphones and a predecessor to the 77-DX.
This microphone is in original vintage cosmetic condition with the expected wear, patina and signs of age shown in the photographs. Please examine the detailed photos, as they are part of the description.
TESTED: The microphone has been connected to an M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface and successfully produces recorded audio. The directional-pattern selector is functional; changing the selector from N to B produced the expected increase in output.
As expected from a vintage passive ribbon microphone, output is low compared with a conventional modern dynamic or condenser microphone. The Fast Track Pro used for testing provides only approximately 40 dB of microphone preamp gain, which is less than normally desirable for a low-output vintage ribbon microphone. For professional use, a high-quality microphone preamp with substantially more clean gain is recommended.
The microphone has not been opened, modified, or internally serviced by me, and I have intentionally avoided disturbing the original ribbon assembly or internal components.
Important: This is a passive vintage ribbon microphone. Phantom power was OFF during testing.
The RCA 77-D is highly regarded for its smooth ribbon character and distinctive variable directional-pattern system and remains an iconic piece of American recording and broadcasting history.
