From the seller
Here is your opportunity to own an almost perfect 1:1 copy of a u87ai for less than 300 dollars. Yes, the modern ai and not the older rendition of the u87. The akg perception 420 is a 1:1 copy of the u87ai circuit. The main difference between the vintage u87i and the modern ai is the polarization voltage of the capsule. Most clones available today utilize the older circuit style with the lower capsule polarization voltage of 48v. Thats great if you want the vintage u87 tone. But it seems harder to come by clones of the modern u87ai with the higher 60v capsule polarization voltage. Thats where these akg perception mics come in. The circuits are a direct copy of the modern u87ai. But the circuit is only one part of the microphone. The akg perception 420 uses a well respected "takstar" u87 style capsule along with true transformer balancing. These capsules are of a very good quality, and mimic the original in almost every way (most importantly in the midrange) except for a small 2-4 db boost in the super high end. To adjust for this peak, the filter cap in the original perception 420 circuit must be replaced to compensate. THIS MICROPHONE HAS THE MODIFICATION DONE TO IT. Once replaced, this is honestly one of the BEST u87 clones ive ever heard. The cap is an extremely small surface mounted component that must be replaced. There is a picture with the cap and a dime for reference of size. If you already have a p420 lying around, and are highly skilled with a soldering iron id recommend doing the mod yourself. If not, you have this mic here offered. This is truly one of the only "clones" ive ever heard to replicate the neumann midrange ive been chasing without spending, well you know. The only reason im selling this one is because i have three, and only need two. And honestly just want someone else to have this and use it for what it is. But who knows, i might buy and mod more in the future if i need more u87's lol. As a person who has tried ALL the clones (i kept the stam, sent all others back- yes the stam audio based on the older u87i hence why i love having these p420's based on the modern u87ai) these to me are on that level. If anything, if you've read this description- you know what to do lol. Make me an offer. Or diy! Thanks and happy recording to all!
